How to Apply for a Police Clearance Certificate in Kenya as Processing Time Drops to 24 Hours
Kenyans seeking employment, government appointments, business opportunities, visa applications, or academic admissions are set to benefit from faster processing of Police Clearance Certificates following the rollout of an upgraded biometric identification system by the government.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, has introduced a modern Multi-Biometric Identification System designed to significantly reduce the processing time for Police Clearance Certificates, commonly known as Certificates of Good Conduct.
Under the enhanced system, applicants can now receive their certificates within 24 hours after completing the required application and fingerprint capture process, a major improvement from the previous waiting period that could extend to several days or even weeks.
A Police Clearance Certificate is an official document issued by the DCI after verifying an applicant's fingerprints against criminal records maintained by the Forensic Fingerprint Identification Bureau. The certificate serves as proof that an individual has no criminal record or indicates the status of any existing records.
It is widely required by employers, government agencies, foreign embassies, educational institutions, and professional organizations during recruitment, licensing, and immigration processes.
Applicants are required to begin the process by logging into their eCitizen account and selecting the Police Clearance Certificate service under the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
After reading the application guidelines, they must fill in the required personal information, choose a convenient fingerprint collection centre, and pay the prescribed application fee through the available payment options.
Once payment has been successfully made, the system generates an invoice together with the C24 fingerprint form. Applicants are expected to print the required documents before visiting their selected fingerprint collection centre.
They should carry the printed forms alongside their original national identification card or any other acceptable identification document for verification.
Fingerprint collection services are available at Huduma Centres, DCI offices across the country, selected government facilities, and Kenyan embassies or high commissions for citizens living abroad.
During the visit, biometric fingerprints are captured electronically before being submitted for verification through the upgraded identification system.
After successful verification, applicants receive a notification informing them that their Police Clearance Certificate is ready.
They can then download the certificate through their eCitizen account, eliminating the need for repeated physical visits to government offices.
The introduction of the new biometric system is expected to improve service delivery by enhancing the speed, accuracy, and reliability of criminal record verification.
Besides reducing waiting times, the system also strengthens document security by minimizing cases of forgery through improved digital verification features.
The faster processing timeline is expected to benefit thousands of Kenyans who require Certificates of Good Conduct for employment opportunities, government appointments, scholarship applications, overseas travel, and other official purposes.
It also reflects the government's continued efforts to digitize public services, improve efficiency, and provide citizens with faster access to essential government documents.
