KNEC Explains Delayed Payments for Invigilators and Supervisors Despite Treasury Releasing KSh1.5 Billion
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has explained the reasons behind the delayed payment of allowances to thousands of teachers who served as invigilators and supervisors during the 2025 national examinations, despite the National Treasury releasing KSh1.5 billion to facilitate the exercise.
According to the examinations council, the delay is not due to a lack of funds but rather an ongoing verification process aimed at ensuring that all eligible contracted professionals receive their payments accurately.
KNEC says the verification exercise is necessary to eliminate errors that could result in incorrect payments or fraudulent claims.
The council noted that some records submitted by contracted professionals contain inconsistencies, including mismatched identification details, incorrect mobile money account information, and errors made during registration.
These discrepancies must be resolved before payments are processed to ensure the right individuals receive their allowances.
The clarification comes after many teachers raised concerns over the prolonged delay in receiving their dues. While some contracted professionals have already been paid, a number of invigilators and supervisors are still waiting for their allowances as the verification exercise continues.
KNEC has assured affected teachers that all genuine claims will be honoured once the verification process is complete.
The council has encouraged those who have not yet received their payments to review and update their personal details where necessary to help speed up the processing of their allowances.
The government has maintained that the release of KSh1.5 billion demonstrates its commitment to settling all pending examination-related payments.
Education officials have also acknowledged the patience shown by teachers and other professionals who played a critical role in ensuring the successful administration of the national examinations.
In addition to clearing the pending allowances, KNEC has announced a three percent increase in payment rates for eligible contracted professionals.
The adjustment is intended to recognise the important contribution made by teachers and examination officials in safeguarding the credibility and integrity of Kenya's national examinations.
The delayed payments have attracted concern within the education sector, with teachers expressing the need for timely disbursement of allowances after every examination cycle.
Many believe prompt payment would boost morale and encourage more professionals to participate in future national examination exercises.
KNEC has reiterated that the payment process is ongoing and that no eligible invigilator or supervisor will be left out.
The council remains confident that once the verification exercise is completed, all outstanding allowances will be released, bringing to an end the uncertainty that has affected thousands of contracted professionals across the country.
