Term Three Set to Begin as Schools Prepare KCSE, KJSEA and KPSEA Candidates for National Examinations
Learners across Kenya are set to return to school later this month for the third and final term of the 2026 academic year, marking the beginning of one of the most critical periods in the education calendar.
The term is expected to focus heavily on revision, assessments and preparations for national examinations, with schools intensifying academic activities for candidates.
According to the Ministry of Education's academic calendar, Term Three will commence on Monday, August 24, providing learners with a nine-week learning period before national examinations begin.
The shortened term places greater responsibility on schools, teachers, parents and learners to maximize every available learning opportunity.
Candidates preparing for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) are expected to spend the opening weeks completing syllabus coverage, sitting continuous assessments and undertaking intensive revision ahead of the examinations.
Education stakeholders have encouraged schools to maintain discipline and create a conducive learning environment that enables candidates to prepare adequately.
Teachers are also expected to closely monitor learners' academic progress while identifying areas requiring additional support before the examination period begins.
Parents have equally been urged to ensure learners report to school on time with all the required learning materials. They are also encouraged to provide emotional support and maintain a stable home environment that allows candidates to concentrate on their studies during the final stretch of the academic year.
The third term is traditionally regarded as the most demanding in the school calendar because it determines the academic progression of thousands of learners.
Grade 6 learners will sit the KPSEA, while Grade 9 learners will undertake the KJSEA, an important assessment under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). Form Four students will also sit the KCSE examination, which remains the gateway to university and other tertiary institutions.
Education experts have advised candidates to adopt consistent study schedules, revise using past examination papers and seek guidance from their teachers whenever they encounter academic challenges.
They further emphasize the importance of balancing revision with adequate rest, proper nutrition and good mental health to enhance concentration and performance.
As schools prepare to reopen, education officials are expected to continue monitoring institutions to ensure adherence to the academic calendar and examination guidelines.
